THE EXPOSURE PROJECT
New Photography by Ben Alper, Anastasia Cazabon, Eric Watts
Feb 2 - Feb 19, 2006
The Urban Landscape
These photographs depict the vastness, loneliness and deterioration of the urban landscape. Considered unattractive, the anonymous locations photographed are largely industrial and generally ignored. There is something exciting about wandering the city, in search of something specific, but not knowing what it is or where to find it. I experience each anonymous place fully, trying to accentuate the subtle beauty of urban landscape. These works strive to enhance the graphic qualities and elevate the aesthetic value of these landscapes by revealing dynamic patterns and textures.

Self-Portrait
I am interested in using photography to tell stories. It's important for me to have a strong connection to the images, so I tend to work around my own life experiences. I use universal themes, such as childhood, fear and the uncertainty of the future to allow the viewer to relate to the image in their own way.
Dream Series
This body of work was an exploration of the common dreams many people have. Such as flying, falling and being chased. I'm fascinated with the idea that even though human beings are all so different, we all share common hopes, fears and concerns, which end up translating through our dreams in similar ways.

Artist Statement
In this technology driven age we are forced to look at our world in a state of structural and societal uniformity as people strive towards a certain sameness. With this in mind I have set out in urban areas with a medium format camera and color film to make deliberate observations capturing the discarded relics of our past. Attention is focused on the personality that gives these common places the flavor that is on its way out in our culture. Approaching these scenes with a fine tuned eye allows me to emphasize the beauty of the everyday.
