Jamaica Plain is a unique Boston neighborhood known for its liberal politics and diverse population. The residents of JP come from a variety of ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, sexual orientations and socioeconomic status. Jamaica Plain Spoken: An Un-Gated Community in teh 21st Century explores the lives of these 'ordinary' people, how they came to live in this community-and more importantly, why they choose to stay.
The project began as a response to the filmmakers' frustration with the impoverished representation of everyday Americans in mainstream media. Inspired by the diversity of the people they encountered in their neighborhood, the filmmakers set out to catalogue the life and work of these people in their own words. They wanted to better understand what connects people in JP, as well as what divides them. In particular they wanted to know what i was that made those of all stripes and persuasions feel at home here and want to remain in this persistently 'edgy' community.
The filmmakers hope there are lessons to be learned that go beyond this singular community. Lessons that can, perhaps, be brought to bear and built upon in other towns and cites here in Massachusetts, or beyond.
Due to a technical catastrophe the project has stalled. Support is desperately needed!
Up until recently Rick and Todd have been able to work on old computers and an old version of Final Cut Pro. After nearly 3 years of successful use, these programs have crashed and need to be upgraded. The goal: $5,000 for 2 new computers and a new version of FCP 6.
This is the only way they can:
1.) retrieve media files that comprise 54 completed portraits on their website www. jamaicaplainspoken.com
2.) continue uploading new interviews
3.) complete a first edit of the feature documentary
please come to JP Art Market the weekend of Dec. 15/16 and speak to Rick or Todd or email them:

Coinciding with Boston's hosting of the Democratic National Convention, this group show storms in for a controversial debut. This exhibit, titled "Church and State" engages and challenges both the government and religious institutions. From an interactive game board with the heads of senate members (including their phone numbers) represented on the playing cards, to a photograph of monks protesting at the feet of the police on an air reserve, to egg tempera paintings of abused prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison, many works in the show engage current political affairs in an unflinching manner. Other pieces more quietly connect the provocative combination of subjects Church and State. From emerging artists to established career heads, including Patti Smith and Allen Ginsberg, the artists in the show represent a range of approach in concept and material.

February 2002Save the Pond!
A standing room crowd of over 400 people attended a city council hearing held at the JP Unitarian Church to protest a proposed condo project on Hellenic Hill. "As much as we love our cars, we have managed not to drive them through our cathedrals, and as much as we love our houses, we can manage not to build them on Hellenic Hill" said Roger Gottlieb.
Gerry Wright presented the city council with 4,000 signatures of people in support of stopping the condo builders. Local City Councilor Maura Hennigan said "that while the city cannot stop building on private land, the mammoth project could be scaled back and made less valuable to the developers". She also pledge the city would work with state and other sources to buy the land which has an estimated value of more than $3 million. City Councilor Hennigan also said only public pressure can save the land. "its up to you to tell us you want your tax money to be spent".
Save the Pond!
"The only way to development project will be defeated is for individual citizens to stand up and be counted to protect the tress and natural watershed" said environmental ecologist and JP resident Gerry Wright, "Once the building starts, this pristine, priceless landscape will be gone forever".
Feb 1998Save the Pond!
JP Art Market joins a coalition of residents and environmentalists in preservation efforts to save Hellenic Hill from development by Dover Builders of Norwood MA. The developers would turn the last green parcel around the pond, seven acres on Prince street, considered an urban wilds area, into high end townhouses called Prince Hill Estates.
